At JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research (JSS AHER), we remain steadfast in our commitment to enhancing agricultural practices through knowledge transfer and fostering connections between local farmers and food producers. ICAR JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) of JSS Mahavidyapeetha in Suttur plays a pivotal role in these efforts by organizing various programs aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture, improving productivity, and ensuring the welfare of farming communities in our region.
On January 3, 2024, ICAR JSS KVK collaborated with Insecticides India Ltd. to conduct a comprehensive three-day awareness program focused on safe insecticide usage. This program, specifically designed for disease control managers, addressed critical aspects of pest, disease, and crop management, with a special focus on the responsible use of Glyfocyte Insecticide.
Dr. Prasad Y.P., a Plant Conservation Scientist at JSS KVK, discussed the usage patterns of Glyfocyte Insecticide, emphasizing its environmental implications when misused. Dr. Shamraj, a Cultivation Scientist, highlighted the significance of timely and judicious application to prevent insecticide resistance and its adverse effects on crops.
The program brought together over 70 pest control managers, reinforcing the collective commitment to sustainable farming practices and the importance of informed decision-making in pest control. Smt. Divya H.V., Head (Incharge) of JSS KVK, emphasized the broader health and environmental risks associated with excessive insecticide use.
On December 22, 2023, JSS KVK launched four promising new paddy varieties as alternatives to the traditional Jyothi variety, offering local farmers viable options to increase their crop yield and resilience. The event took place at Gurulingegowda’s paddy field in Biligere Village, Nanjangud Taluk, and was attended by over 20 farmers from surrounding villages.
Dr. H.B. Manoj, a Paddy Variety Scientist, introduced disease-resistant varieties such as ‘Sahyadri Kempu Mukti’ and ‘KMP 220,’ which demonstrated improved height and resistance to diseases compared to the Jyothi variety. The farmers expressed a keen interest in these new varieties, citing their potential for improved yield and resilience to disease.
This initiative emphasized the importance of farmer-scientist collaboration and community involvement in selecting the most suitable varieties based on real-world outcomes and market demands. Smt. H.V. Divya praised the farmers for their participation and highlighted the importance of continuous learning and adaptation in farming.
On October 2, 2023, ICAR JSS KVK hosted an event to demonstrate innovative agricultural techniques to local farmers. Over 30 farmers participated in hands-on demonstrations of weed management in paddy fields and the Back and Front Power Rotary procedure for mounding in sugarcane crops.
Shri Balakrishna, an engineer from Shrachi Company, provided practical training on modern machinery like the power weeder, while Shri Shamraj discussed the urgent need for eco-friendly weed management practices to minimize pesticide use and protect soil health.
This event demonstrated the Kendra’s dedication to bridging the gap between traditional farming practices and modern technologies, empowering farmers with advanced tools and techniques for enhanced productivity and sustainability.
In recognition of its dedication to banana cultivation in Mysuru District, ICAR JSS KVK was awarded the Best KVK Award by the National Research Center for Banana during its 30th Foundation Day celebrations on August 21, 2023.
The award recognized the Kendra’s efforts to improve banana cultivation, particularly the support for traditional varieties like Elakki Baale and Nanjangud Rasabale, amidst challenges such as pests and diseases. Through studies on integrated nutrient and pest management, as well as the introduction of high-density banana cropping systems, the Kendra has helped increase yields by 35% for participating farmers.
This achievement highlights the importance of sustainable practices and technology adoption in enhancing productivity and addressing challenges in the banana farming sector.
On July 24, 2023, ICAR JSS KVK organized an Integrated Crop Protection Training Program in collaboration with the Srikshetra Dharmastala Rural Development Program, focusing on vegetable crops like tomato and chilli. The program provided over 30 farmers with expert-led training on disease management, pest control, and nutrient application.
Dr. Vinay G.M., a Horticultural Scientist, and Dr. Prasad Y.P., a Crop Conserver, shared valuable insights into managing common diseases like blight and leaf spot, as well as the importance of using integrated light nutrients to enhance crop yields. The training also emphasized mechanization, with tools for plant conservation distributed to participating farmers.
This event further illustrates the Kendra's commitment to enhancing local agricultural practices through training and technology, ensuring that farmers are well-equipped to tackle challenges in crop protection.
Through these various initiatives, ICAR JSS KVK continues to empower local farmers with the knowledge and tools necessary for sustainable agriculture. By focusing on innovative techniques, disease-resistant varieties, responsible pesticide use, and crop protection, JSS AHER is making significant strides toward improving agricultural practices and the livelihoods of farming communities in the region.
These efforts are part of a broader strategy to foster collaboration between farmers, agricultural scientists, and other stakeholders to promote sustainability, increase productivity, and contribute to the long-term health of the agricultural ecosystem.
