Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture

Empowering Farmers and Food Producers for a Sustainable Future

At the JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research (JSSAHER), we are committed to enhancing community well-being by providing local farmers and food producers with essential knowledge, skills, and technologies in food security, sustainable agriculture, and aquaculture. Our initiatives align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG 2), which aims to end hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture.

Our Multifaceted Approach

We recognize the critical role that local farmers play in food production and the challenges they face, including outdated practices, limited resources, and insufficient exposure to modern techniques. To address these issues, JSSAHER employs a comprehensive approach that includes:

  • Knowledge Transfer:We facilitate the dissemination of best agricultural practices to local farmers. This includes educating them about sustainable techniques such as crop rotation and integrated pest management, which enhance crop yields while improving soil health and environmental sustainability.
  • Skill Development:Our training programs are designed to equip local farmers and food producers with practical skills in modern agricultural and aquaculture techniques. For example, farmers receive hands-on training in areas such as sustainable fish farming, soil management, and organic farming practices, empowering them to enhance their productivity and economic outcomes.
  • Technology Integration: JSSAHER introduces local farmers to modern agricultural tools and technologies, such as efficient irrigation systems and precision farming techniques. These innovations help farmers optimize resource use, reduce operational costs, and improve overall agricultural efficiency.

Impact on Food Security and Rural Development

Our initiatives extend beyond individual farmer training and significantly contribute to food security and rural development:

  • Food Security: By promoting sustainable agricultural practices, JSSAHER helps ensure a reliable and nutritious food supply for local communities. This includes fostering the cultivation of diverse and nutrient-rich crops and enhancing sustainable aquaculture practices.
  • Economic Empowerment: The training and resources provided by JSSAHER lead to increased agricultural productivity, creating job opportunities and stimulating economic growth in rural areas. As local farmers adopt modern practices, they often experience improved income levels and a better quality of life.

Illustrative Examples of Our Commitment

Specific programs exemplifying JSSAHER's commitment to food security and sustainable agriculture include:

  • Mushroom Cultivation Initiative: Students and faculty participate in hands-on training at the Mushroom Cultivation Centre, learning about various mushroom types, cultivation methods, and the economic benefits of mushroom farming. This initiative not only imparts practical knowledge but also aligns with sustainable agriculture goals.
  • Aquaculture Training: Training in modern aquaculture techniques has empowered local fish farmers, leading to increased fish yields while conserving vital water resources.

Collaborative Efforts with JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK)

In addition to our university initiatives, we collaborate with the JSS Krishi Vigyan Kendra (Agricultural Sciences Centre), established in 1994 in Suttur with the support of the Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR). The KVK is dedicated to enhancing agricultural practices and empowering rural communities through various activities, including:

  • Technology Testing and Field Trials: JSS KVK conducts technology tests and field trials to identify effective and sustainable agricultural practices. These tests promote natural resource conservation, sustainable land use, and biodiversity protection.
  • Training Programs: The center runs frequent training programs for farmers, women, and youth, enhancing skills in modern farming practices and increasing agricultural productivity. About 2,229 farmers participate annually in various programs, learning about innovative techniques and technologies that improve economic outcomes.
  • Vocational Training: JSS KVK offers short and long-term vocational programs, promoting self-employment and sustainable livelihoods.
  • Seed Supply and Support: High-quality seeds and biological products are distributed to farmers to support yield improvement and access to essential farming resources.
  • Krishi Mela: This annual agricultural fair coincides with the Suttur Jatra Mahotsav, offering farmers access to agricultural tools, techniques, and consultations with agricultural scientists, creating a rich knowledge exchange environment.
  • Natural Farming Training: JSS KVK promotes sustainable agriculture by educating farmers on natural farming techniques. This program addresses the adverse effects of chemical fertilizers on soil and encourages the use of compost, cow dung, and cow urine to restore soil health. Approximately 55 farmers engaged in this interactive training to explore viable alternatives for sustainable farming.

Recognitions and Impact

JSS KVK has received recognition for its contributions to the agricultural sector, including the “Best Sector KVK Award” from ICAR in 2010. The center's initiatives, such as introducing BT cotton and new crop varieties, have positively impacted farmer productivity and livelihoods, improving socio-economic conditions in the region.

JSSAHER and Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS)

In addition to the agricultural initiatives, JSSAHER University and Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS) work collaboratively to support skill development in rural and urban areas. While JSSAHER promotes sustainable agriculture and food security knowledge, JSS focuses on skill upgradation in diverse vocations for economically and educationally disadvantaged groups. This alignment enhances community capabilities, fostering economic resilience and sustainable livelihoods in both agricultural and non-agricultural sectors.
