In collaboration with the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru, and the National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management, Hyderabad, JSS KVK launched a specialized 15-day Certificate Course in Integrated Nutrition Management (CCINM) for fertilizer traders. This program, organized by the Staff Training Unit-Samethi (South), runs from July 29 to August 12, 2024, at our campus in Suttur.

On July 25, 2024, JSS KVK held a successful field day event to introduce the newly developed Arka Yashaswi chilli variety, specifically tailored for the local climate. Developed by the Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR), Bengaluru, this chilli variety is known for its robust growth, high yield, and resistance to Muturu Roga (mint disease). Dr. Vinay from JSS KVK addressed the attending farmers, discussing essential practices in integrated crop management, field preparation, pest control, and crop variety selection. Farmers had the opportunity to learn how to maximize yields by choosing crop varieties suited to local conditions.
The highlight of the event was a live demonstration of the Arka Yashaswi chilli, followed by the distribution of crop plants to participating farmers, enabling them to directly benefit from this innovation in agricultural technology.
In addition to the focus on chilli cultivation, Dr. Deepak, a home scientist from JSS KVK, distributed vegetable crop seeds to women farmers and representatives from local Anganwadi centers. This initiative is part of JSS KVK’s ongoing effort to foster self-sufficiency and improve nutrition at the household level through kitchen gardening. By supporting women farmers and community representatives, the program aims to encourage sustainable, home-based food production.

During the event, a local farmer shared his success story, illustrating the challenges of pest management in Hyacinth Beans cultivation. Such testimonials reinforced the value of the training and the importance of implementing expert advice.

This initiative was specifically designed for disease control managers and aimed to address critical aspects of pest, disease, and crop management in horticultural crops. The focus was on the responsible and discreet usage of Glyfocyte Insecticide, a key topic in sustainable agriculture practices. Dr. Prasad Y.P., a Plant Conservation Scientist at JSS KVK, led discussions on Glyfocyte Insecticide, detailing its usage patterns and the environmental implications of excessive use.
Participants learned about the guidelines set by the Central Insecticide Board and Registration Committee, which recommend the use of Glyfocyte Insecticide exclusively in dry lands and horticultural crops. Dr. Shamraj, a Cultivation Scientist, emphasized the significance of timely and judicious insecticide application, highlighting how the proper quantity used on schedule can reduce insecticide resistance and mitigate potential negative effects on crops.
The program brought together more than 70 pest control managers, underscoring a collective commitment to sustainable and responsible agricultural practices. Shri Gangappa Hipparagi, Field Manager, called for collaborative efforts among all stakeholders to raise awareness about proper insecticide usage, reinforcing the idea that informed individuals play a vital role in educating farmers.

Dr. H.B. Manoj, a Paddy Variety Scientist from V.C. Farm, shared valuable insights on disease and pest prevention strategies for paddy crops. The participating farmers expressed a preference for the new varieties, particularly ‘Sahyadri Kempu Mukti’ and ‘KMP 220,’ noting their disease resistance and improved height compared to the traditional Jyothi variety.
The program was inaugurated by progressive farmers Sri Shankarguru and Gurulingegowda, along with Dr. Manoj and Smt. H.V. Divya, Senior Scientist and Head of JSS KVK. Dr. Manoj highlighted the positive outcomes observed in the fields of farmers who had adopted the KMP 220 variety, showcasing its effectiveness.
In her address, Smt. H.V. Divya praised the farmers for their enthusiastic participation in adopting new varieties and highlighted the characteristics of the newly introduced red paddy varieties, including those developed by Kerala Agriculture University. The event exemplified the collaborative spirit between farmers and agro-scientists, with farmers actively contributing to the selection process based on yield, market prices, and plant characteristics post-harvest.
The engagement of over 20 farmers, both male and female, from surrounding villages in evaluating the paddy varieties underscored the initiative's success. Notably, ‘Sahyadri Kempu Mukti’ received the highest score among the evaluated varieties, indicating its suitability for the region.

Shri Shamraj, a cultivation expert from JSS KVK, addressed the challenges faced in traditional farming, particularly the declining number of traditional weed pickers in paddy cultivation. He highlighted the urgent need for eco-friendly weed management practices to mitigate the negative impact of excessive pesticide use on soil health. By introducing the power weeder, he emphasized its role in promoting sustainable farming practices.
The demonstration underscored the importance of timely power weeder application, ideally within 15 to 20 days after sowing, to optimize its effectiveness across various paddy cultivation methods. Additionally, farmers were educated on water conservation techniques, particularly the need to halt water flow in paddy fields during the operation of the power weeder.

The award highlights the significant role that ICAR JSS KVK plays in banana cultivation, a vital agricultural practice in Mysuru District, particularly for traditional varieties like Elakki Baale and Nanjangud Rasabale. Despite challenges posed by pests and diseases, the Kendra has been steadfast in its support for local farmers since 1994-95, focusing on overcoming these hurdles to improve banana cultivation and yield.
The Kendra has implemented comprehensive studies on integrated nutrient management and pest and disease management, along with successful technology demonstrations that utilize both bio and chemical management techniques. These initiatives have proven invaluable for farmers, especially in adopting intercropping methods with marigold, cucumber, Mangalore cucumber, and tomato.
Moreover, the introduction of a high-density banana cropping system has optimized resource utilization in farmers' fields. Since 2009, the Kendra has also provided Baale Samruddhi, a light nutrient mix, at subsidized rates, leading to a remarkable 35% increase in yield for participating farmers.
The Best KVK award recognizes ICAR JSS KVK's multifaceted efforts, including technology testing, method demonstrations, scientific cultivation training, and seminars on integrated pest and disease management. Dr. Vinay also introduced participants to the application of integrated light nutrients aimed at improving crop yields.
In addition, Dr. Prasad Y.P., a Crop Conserver, shared valuable insights into identifying and managing diseases commonly affecting vegetable crops, particularly during the rainy season. The training covered critical issues such as first blight disease, last blight disease, seedling blight disease, bacterial leaf spot disease, chilli trips, and various spot diseases, empowering farmers with the knowledge needed to safeguard their crops.
An Agriculture Officer from the Srikshetra Dharmastala Rural Development Program (Retd.) B.C. Trust addressed the participants, underscoring the importance of mechanization in modern agriculture. He highlighted the range of support facilities offered by the trust to aid farmers in their endeavors.
To further support practical learning, the program included a technology inspection session, where plant conservation tools were distributed to select farmers, enhancing their capabilities in crop protection.
