Introduction

The achievement of Good Health and Well-being is a fundamental objective aligned with global health priorities, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3. JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research (JSS AHER) is dedicated to fostering health equity and improving quality of life through a wide range of outreach activities. In collaboration with various local, national, and international organizations, JSS AHER has implemented several impactful initiatives that contribute to public health awareness, disease prevention, and the promotion of well-being. These initiatives, ranging from vaccination programs to health screening camps, forensic awareness events, and mental health support, have significantly enhanced the community's understanding of health-related issues and empowered individuals to take proactive steps toward better health. This report highlights the collaborative efforts of JSS AHER, its stakeholders, and its community engagement strategies aimed at achieving Good Health and Well-being.


Forensic Fair (07-12-2023)

  1. Collaborations
    • Karnataka Police Academy: Educated visitors on various firearms.
    • CEN Police Station: Raised awareness about Cyber Crime and digital threats.
    • Department of Clinical Pharmacy, JSS Pharmacy College: Provided information on poisoning precautions and toll-free assistance.
    • Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology: Conducted live demonstrations on fingerprint testing, “TRAP CASE” scenarios, and crime scene management.
    • Snake Shyam: Demonstrated snake handling and first aid for snake poisoning.
    • Department of Nutrition and Dietetics: Conducted tests to highlight food adulteration.
    • JSS Institute of Speech and Hearing: Demonstrated speaker identification techniques in forensic acoustics.
    • Department of Forensic Odontology, JSS Dental College: Highlighted the role of dental evidence in crime investigations.
  2. Outcomes
    • Over 5000 students, teachers, and members of the public attended.
    • The fair raised significant public awareness about crime investigation and forensic science, enhancing societal understanding of forensic processes and safety.

HPV Vaccination Programme (19-12-2023)

  1. Collaborations
    • Public Health Research Institute of India (PHRII) and JSS AHER: Jointly organized the vaccination campaign targeting 200 girls in rural and peri-urban areas of Mysuru.
    • School of Public Health and Department of Pediatrics, JSS AHER: Coordinated the vaccination initiative.
    • Sun Pharma: Sponsored the vaccination doses, which are valued at Rs.10,500 each.
  2. Outcomes
    • 200 girls from Mysuru vaccinated with the Gardasil-9 vaccine, which combats HPV strains linked to cervical cancer.
    • Strong alignment with WHO’s Global Strategy for Cervical Cancer Elimination.
    • Awareness raised about cervical cancer prevention and HPV vaccination’s role in reducing cancer burden.

Ambari Sickle Cell Disease Health Systems Project (05-03-2024 and 06-03-2024)

  1. Collaborations:
    • School of Public Health: Coordinated the event, bringing together national and international experts.
    • Chamarajanagara District Health and Family Welfare Services and Institute of Public Health, Bengaluru: Collaborated on panel discussions for SCD management.
    • Centre for Training Research and Innovation in Tribal Health: Supported through regional health system engagement.
    • National Alliance of Sickle Cell Organizations (NASCO) and Novartis Healthcare: Contributed to discussions on improving SCD care and awareness.
  2. Outcomes
    • The project focused on elevating public awareness, validating diagnostic techniques, and creating supportive frameworks for SCD management.
    • Strategic recommendations were developed, including a public-private partnership (PPP) model for SCD care.
    • Acknowledgment of the need for SCD awareness and better healthcare frameworks, especially in tribal and rural areas.
    • Actionable plans for short, mid, and long-term SCD management in primary healthcare were discussed.

Forensics Club - Oculis Iuris Debate Competition (16-03-2024)

    • Forensic Club of JSS Medical College: Organized the event, engaging students in critical debates on rights and responsibilities.
    • Faculty Mentors: Provided adjudication and insights during the competition.
  2. Outcomes
    • Enhanced students' understanding of forensic ethics and the implications of age-related legal responsibilities.
    • Winning students were recognized for their exceptional skills in debating complex issues.
    • The debate promoted academic and intellectual growth, fostering a culture of critical thinking.

NSS Special Medical Camp (26th February - 3rd March 2024)

  • Collaboration: This event was supported by JSS Medical College, under the JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research (JSS AHER), with logistical and administrative support from Hosahalli Gramapanchayiti, Mandya District. The camp was organized with the help of JSS Medical College’s faculty and 50 NSS volunteers from Phase II MBBS students.
  • Outcome: The camp provided free health screening and treatments to residents of Hosahalli, Mogarahalli, Karekura, and Palahalli. The involvement of the students helped them understand community health issues and fostered a sense of social responsibility among them. The camp turned out to be a valuable learning experience, contributing to the objective of improving healthcare accessibility.

International Yoga Day (21st June 2024)

  • Collaboration: Organized in collaboration with the Yoga Sports Foundation, Mysuru, and various community groups.
  • Outcome: The event saw participation from over 100 students from JSS Medical College and AHER. The theme, "Yoga for the Society," emphasized the holistic benefits of yoga for physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. The large participation helped foster a sense of unity and health awareness within the community.

Orphanage Visit (10th May 2024)

  • Collaboration: The JSSMC M.I.N.D.S Psychiatry Club: Sapiens partnered with Kala Kriti to organize the visit.
  • Outcome: The visit to Sri Chayadevi Anath Ashrama, Chikkadanahalli, brought joy to the children by distributing snacks, stationary, and sports equipment. This initiative created a positive impact on the lives of orphaned children, fostering a sense of compassion and community service among participants.

Race for 7 - Marathon for Rare Diseases Awareness

  • Collaboration: Organized by the Organization for Rare Disease India (ORDI) with participation from JSS AHER’s medical community.
  • Outcome: The marathon aimed at raising awareness for the 7,000 rare diseases in India saw participation from over 350 people. The event empowered patients and their families by connecting them with resources and advocating for greater attention to rare diseases.

Awareness Campaign for Asha Workers and Anganwadi Teachers

  • Collaboration:A joint initiative involving the Department of Public Health Dentistry and JSS Hospital, Suttur.
  • Outcome: The campaign helped raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco usage, equipping healthcare workers with tools to educate the public on tobacco control and prevention.

  • Collaboration:This event was organized in collaboration with the Indian Dental Association, Mysore branch, Vikram College of Nursing, and the Rotary Club of Vijaynagar.
  • Outcome: The rally and walkathon reached hundreds of participants, educating the public about the harmful effects of tobacco use and advocating for tobacco cessation, promoting healthy lifestyles.

Gender Sensitization and Prevention of Sexual Harassment Awareness Program (15th July 2023)

  • Collaboration:This event was conducted in collaboration with Dr. S. Brindha, Assistant Professor, Department of Education, SASTRA University.
  • Outcome: Around 250 students participated, gaining knowledge about women's rights, the Prevention of Sexual Harassment Act 2013, and domestic violence issues. The event highlighted the importance of creating safe environments in academic institutions and workplaces.

Blood Donation Camp

    • Department of Pharmacy Practice, Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA), National Service Scheme (NSS) of JSS College of Pharmacy, Ooty.
    • Blood Bank Unit of Government District Headquarters Hospital, Ooty.
  1. Outcomes
    • A successful blood donation camp held on 25th September 2023 at the JSS College Auditorium.
    • Over 55 units of blood were donated by staff, students, and volunteers, showing a high level of engagement in this social welfare initiative.

World Mental Health Day

    • Department of Pharmacy Practice . of JSS College of Pharmacy.
    • IPA Nilgiris Local Branch.
  1. Outcomes
    • A community outreach event was conducted in Melur Hosarhatty village on October 10, 2023, to raise awareness about mental health.
    • The event included motivational talks, music performances, and a skit highlighting mental health issues, with strong engagement from the local community.
    • Encouraged the importance of self-care, resilience, and seeking support when dealing with mental health challenges.

Health Screening Camp

    • Department of Pharmacy Practice JSS College of Pharmacy.
    • Rotaract Club of Nilgiris West, Punjab National Bank, IPA, and NLB.

    • A health screening camp held on 15th November 2023 at Punjab National Bank, Ooty, with 113 participants benefiting.
    • Services included blood pressure monitoring, blood glucose testing, and BMI calculations, followed by counseling and distribution of informational pamphlets on managing diabetes, hypertension, and obesity.

Cervical Cancer Screening Awareness Workshop

    • Department of Pharmacy Practice JSS College of Pharmacy.
    • IPA Nilgiris Local Branch.
    • CSIR (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research).

    • Conducted on 24th November 2023 in Sokkanalli tribal village, Nilgiris, with around 75 tribal women participating.
    • The workshop raised awareness on the importance of cervical cancer screening, diagnosis, vaccination, and prevention, emphasizing healthy lifestyle choices.

National Seminar on Precision Medicine

    • Department of Pharmacy Practice JSS College of Pharmacy.
    • DBT - CTEP, JSS AHER Mysuru, and IPA Nilgiris Local Branch.
  1. Outcomes
    • A two-day national seminar (1st-2nd September 2023) with 398 delegates from 23 institutions across five states.
    • Focused on the clinical applications of pharmacogenomics and precision medicine, encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration and the implementation of pharmacogenomic testing in clinical practice.
    • Featured 45 oral and e-poster presentations from researchers, fostering knowledge exchange.

World AIDS Day Awareness Rally

    • The rally, flagged off by the District Collector, aimed to raise awareness about AIDS and support people affected by the condition.

Walkathon for Antibiotic Resistance

    • Department of Microbiology, JSS College of Pharmacy.
    • District Police (Superintendent of Police, Mysuru District).

    • A Walkathon event on 21st September 2023 raised awareness about antibiotic resistance, health, and hygiene, involving around 300 participants.
    • Encouraged responsible antibiotic use and proper hygiene practices, with key messages from the Superintendent of Police and other health experts.

Sports for Physical Fitness

    • A three-day sports meet organized from 3rd to 5th July 2024 at JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research, with active participation from students and faculty to promote physical fitness.

NSS Tribal Village Camp (6th October 2023)

  • Departments Involved: Department of Pharmacy Practice, Department of Nutrition & Dietetics, Faculty of Life Sciences, and JSS Medical College, Dental College, and School of Life Sciences.
  • External Collaborations: Tribal Welfare Officer Ms. Prabha Urs, WHO Surveillance Officer Dr. Ravisha, and Basavaraj Taluk Tribal Officer.
  • Health Screening Outcomes:
    • 20 tribal villagers were screened for blood pressure and glucose levels.
    • 5 villagers had elevated blood glucose levels and 7 had elevated blood pressure.
    • Those with elevated levels were advised on non-pharmacological management and referred for further diagnosis and treatment.
  • Sports Materials Distribution:Various sports items worth INR 21,000 were distributed to children, promoting physical activity and well-being.
  • Nutrition Awareness:
    • Posters highlighting the nutritional values of vegetables, fruits, and millets were displayed to educate both school children and the tribal community.
    • A lecture on the importance of micronutrients and locally available food was delivered by Dr. Sushma B.V, Assistant Professor in the Department of Nutrition & Dietetics.
  • Tribal Welfare Focus: The event emphasized the importance of health and nutrition, fostering better awareness in the tribal community.

Health is Wealth Walkathon (29th October 2023)

  1. Collaborations
    • Organized in association with Scope Foundation.
    • Inaugurated by Shri Jagadguru Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Mahaswamiji (Chancellor of JSS AHER) and Mysuru Maharani Trishika Kumari Wadiyar.
  2. Outcomes
    • Over 250 NSS volunteers participated in the walkathon, emphasizing the theme “Health is Wealth.”
    • This public event successfully sensitized the Mysuru city populace on the importance of maintaining health.

Health Screening Camp (4th November 2023)

  1. Collaborations
    • Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA), Mysuru Branch, Department of Pharmacy Practice, and NSS Unit of JSS College of Pharmacy.
  2. Outcomes
    • 45 inmates of JSS Old Age Home were screened for blood pressure and blood glucose levels.
    • 21 inmates were found to have elevated blood glucose levels, and 28 had high blood pressure.
    • Non-pharmacological management advice was provided, and referrals were made for further treatment.

Cancer Awareness Program and Safe Use of Medications (7th November 2023)

    • Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA), Mysuru Branch, Department of Pharmacy Practice, and NSS Unit of JSS College of Pharmacy.
  2. Outcomes
    • The awareness program was conducted at three locations, educating the public on cancer and the safe use of medications.

Walkathon on World Cancer Day

    • Bharath Hospital & Institute of Oncology Mysuru with NSS Unit JSS College of Pharmacy.

    • Awareness raised about the ill effects of tobacco use in the community.
    • 40 NSS Volunteers, teaching staff, and the NSS Program Officer participated, engaging the local community on health risks and preventive measures.

Exhibition of Poison Information Center at Suttur Jathra Expo

    • JSS College of Pharmacy, Mysuru showcased various departments and their contributions to the public.
    • Poison Information Centre raised awareness about the safe use of medicines, pesticide handling, and emergency poison management.
  2. Outcomes
    • Educated thousands of visitors on the safe use of medicines, first-aid for poisoning, and available health services.
    • Focused on safe pesticide use for farmers and disease management for the general public, especially regarding conditions like Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, and Asthma.
    • The Suttur Jathra Exhibition Committee recognized and rewarded the college for active participation and community education.

Health Screening Camp at Taripura Village

    • NSS Unit JSS College of Pharmacy, Mysuru with the Department of Pharmacy Practice.
  2. Outcomes
    • 200 villagers were screened for blood pressure and blood glucose levels.
    • Identified elevated levels in 80 villagers for blood glucose and 87 for blood pressure.
    • Advised non-pharmacological management and referrals for further medical consultation, improving health awareness in rural communities.

Eye Camp at Taripura Village

  2. Outcomes
    • 80 villagers were screened for eye-related conditions such as Cataracts, Retina damage, and general vision problems.
    • Positive feedback from the community, contributing to better eye health awareness.

Dental Health Camp at Taripura Village

    • 300 villagers screened for dental issues like toothaches, fillings, sensitivity, and extractions.

World Ozone Day & Substance Abuse Awareness Program (16-09-2023):

  • Collaboration: Government High School, Medar’s Block, Bamboo Bazaar.
  • Outcome: Increased awareness among high school students on the dangers of substance abuse and the importance of ozone layer conservation. Students participated in a role-play, fostering engagement with the topic.

World Mental Health Day (16-10-2023):

  • Collaboration: Department of Psychiatry, JSS Medical College; NIMHANS, Bengaluru.
  • Outcome: A panel discussion led to greater awareness of mental health challenges, stigma, and coping mechanisms. It provided medical students with insights into managing mental health both personally and professionally.

World AIDS Day (01-12-2023)

  • Collaboration: JSS Urban Health Center, Government High School, Medar Block, Bamboo Bazaar.
  • Outcome: Awareness about HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and stigma reduction. An interactive session led to better knowledge about the theme “Let communities lead.”

Sexual and Reproductive Health Awareness Day (12-02-2024)

  • Collaboration: School of Public Health, JSSMC; Urban Primary Health Centre, Bannimantap, Mysuru.
  • Outcome: Engaged the public in discussions on sexual and reproductive health, contraception, and HPV vaccines. Evaluated awareness through pre-and post-test questionnaires.

Leprosy Awareness Programme (15-02-2024)

  • Collaboration: School of Public Health, JSS Medical College; Nanjangudu Schools.
  • Outcome: Increased awareness among students about leprosy recognition and the importance of timely medical care. Interactive sessions and quizzes promoted empathy.

World Glaucoma Day (01-03-2024)

  • Collaboration: School of Public Health, JSS Medical College; Missionaries of Charity, Mysuru.
  • Outcome: Educated women over 40 about the risks of glaucoma, screening importance, and symptoms, with information delivered in both English and Kannada.

World Rare Disease Day (01-03-2024)

  • Collaboration: School of Public Health, JSS Medical College; Rotary Club, Mysuru; JSS Sahana Integrated and Special School for Differently Abled Children.
  • Outcome: Promoted awareness about rare diseases and fostered empathy for patients through activities like drawing competitions, presentations, and interactive discussions with parents and faculty.

National Forensic Medicine Day (12-05-2024) and World Schizophrenia Day (24-05-2024)

  • Collaboration: The awareness program was a joint initiative between the Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology and the Department of Psychiatry at JSS Medical College.
  • Outcome: The program highlighted the intersection of forensic medicine and psychiatry in schizophrenia, with key topics presented by experts such as Dr. Murali MR (biological basis of schizophrenia) and Dr. Smitha Rani (forensic aspects of crime). The event fostered collaboration between these two fields, enhancing understanding of the complexities of schizophrenia.

World Hypertension Day (17-05-2024)

  • Collaboration: The Department of Community Medicine, JSS Medical College, organized a hypertension screening camp in collaboration with JSS Urban Health Centre.
  • Outcome: A health awareness talk was conducted by Dr. H.V. Rama, providing important information on the theme Measure your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control it, Live Longer. The screening and awareness session benefited the local community in managing hypertension.

Tobacco Free Life: Healthcare Professionals’ Vital Role and Responsibilities

  • Collaboration:
    • Dr. D.S. Aruna (Dental Health Public Consultant and Tobacco Cessation Specialist): Contributed as a guest speaker, emphasizing the role of healthcare professionals in tobacco cessation.

    • Indoco Warren Pharmaceuticals: Sponsored oral hygiene kits for the children.
    • JSS Hospital, Department of Paediatrics: Contributed to the educational aspects of the camp, with Dr. N. Rashmi providing expert input.

Launch of 'Antibiotica' Mobile App
