“Good health and well-being” are the vital for overall development of an individual, the society and the nation. It promotes both physical and mental benefits which contributes for improvement in productivity and creativeness. Ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being at all ages is essential to sustainable development. SDG 3 aspires to ensure health and well-being for all, including a bold commitment to end the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and other communicable diseases. Health is a fundamental human right and a key indicator of sustainable development. India has come a long way in achieving SDG 3. Some of the path-breaking initiatives taken by the government in this regard:

  • National Health Mission (NHM) - The NHM aims to improve availability and access to affordable and quality healthcare, particularly for those residing in rural areas based on indicators as an important step toward achieving SDG 3.
  • Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme - This flagship health insurance scheme was launched to provide free healthcare services to the poor and underprivileged sections of society.
  • National Programme for Health Care for the Elderly (NPHCE) - The objective of NPHCE is to provide separate, specialized, and comprehensive healthcare to the elderly including outreach services.
  • Immunization. India has made considerable progress in immunizing its population against various diseases, including measles, polio, and tetanus.

Special Smiles Oral Health Clinic – 20-07-2023

"Special Smiles" oral health clinic at JSS Hospital in Mysore was inaugurated on 20.07.2023. This clinic aims to provide oral health services specifically for specially-abled children and children with medically compromised conditions. The collaboration between the Pediatrics Department and the Department of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry shows a commitment to improving the overall healthcare of these vulnerable children.

The clinic was inaugurated by esteemed individuals in the medical field. Dr.Basavana Gowdappa, Principal, JSSMCH served as the Chief Guest, while Ms. Hemamalini Jairam, Co-founder of WeCan, was the Guest of Honor. Their presence highlights the significance of this initiative. The event was also graced by Dr. Shyam Prasad Shetty, Head of the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery and Deputy Director Clinical at JSS Hospital, Dr.Manjunath, Director of Diagnostics GV, Dr.Shanthmallappa, Resident Medical Officer and Mr Lokesh, administrative officer, JSS Hospital, further emphasizing the interdisciplinary and holistic approach towards healthcare.

The patrons of the clinic, including Dr.Prashanth S N, Head of Pediatrics, Dr.Dhakshaini MR, Principal of JSSDCH, Dr.B.Nandlal, Head of Pediatric Dentistry, and Dr.Anushree SM, Administrative Officer of JSSDCH, Mysore, further demonstrate the support and importance of the endeavour.

The clinical team, led by Dr.Raghavendra Shanbog, Reader, along with Dr. Chanchala HP and Dr. Shruti SK, Assistant Professors from the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, will play a crucial role in providing specialized oral healthcare to the children. It was heart-warming that the children from the specially-abled school participated by giving an invocation, making the occasion even more special.

The clinic's schedule of operation, every Thursday from 10 am to 4 pm, allows for regular and dedicated care for the children. Overall, the inauguration of the "Special Smiles" oral health clinic marks a significant step towards improving the well-being of specially-abled children and children with medically compromised conditions, ensuring they receive the attention and care they need for their oral health.

NAFLD/NASH Screening Camp – 04-08-2023

The SIG for Liver and Life in association with School of Public Health, Department of Gastroenterology, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, and Echosens, spearheaded a significant public health initiative. A screening camp focused on Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) was successfully conducted on the 4th of August-2023 at JSS Medical College for staff of JSS Medical College, Dental College, Pharmacy College, and FLS. The camp served as a pivotal platform to enhance awareness about these emerging liver conditions while emphasizing the importance of early detection and intervention.

Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) is a liver condition characterized by inflammation in the liver and fibrosis due to excess fat accumulation. It is a more severe form of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and can lead to serious liver problems if left untreated. It affects over 115 million people worldwide. NASH is a silent epidemic.

Participants: The event witnessed an impressive turnout with approximately 187 participants, including teaching and non-teaching staff, administrative staff, and security officers from different colleges under JSS AHER.

  • Thorough risk factor assessment, accounting for elements such as obesity and high blood pressure.
  • Body fat analysis, enabling a holistic understanding of participants' health status.
  • Fibroscan, a specialized diagnostic tool providing insights into liver health.
  • Nutritional counseling sessions, equipping participants with dietary guidance to mitigate the risk of NAFLD/NASH.

Impact: The resounding success of the NAFLD/NASH screening camp was evident through the remarkable response it garnered. With nearly 180 registrations, the camp effectively highlighted the growing awareness surrounding liver health issues within the community. The emphasis on early detection was underscored as a potent strategy to alleviate the burden of NAFLD/NASH and enhance overall public health.

Collaborations: The collaborative efforts of public health specialists, hepatologists, gastroenterologists, medical students, and dedicated volunteers were instrumental in the triumph of the screening camp. Key collaborators included the School of Public Health, Department of Gastroenterology, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, and Echosens.

Hands-on Training Session on Anatomy Topics for Yoga Trainers - 19th August 2023

A hands-on training session on Anatomy topics was organized by the Department of Anatomy, JSS Medical College Mysuru, on 19th August 2023 for PG Diploma students in Yoga from Sri Patanjali Yoga Studies & Research Centre, Mysuru.

Welcome Address: Dr. Vidya C S, Professor and Head, Dept. of Anatomy, JSS Medical College, welcomed all the participants on behalf of JSS Medical College. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Vidya C S, emphasizing the in-depth knowledge of body structure so that it becomes easy for yoga practitioners to learn body movements, functions, and alignments. She stressed how it helps yoga practitioners and instructors deal with injuries in the right manner. She provided an overall view of the human body and the role of Anatomy in different types of asanas.

Key Sessions:

  • Respiratory System: Dr. Najma Mobin, Associate Professor, explained parts of the respiratory system, breathing exercises, and demonstrated the thoracic cage and different parts of the lungs.
  • Circulatory System: Dr. Shivaprakash S, Associate Professor, gave an overview of the circulatory system and demonstrated the external and internal features of the heart.
  • Brain and Nervous System: Dr. Pushpa NB, Associate Professor, demonstrated the brain and peripheral nervous system, its coverings, position, functions, and nerve injuries.
  • Abdominal Organs: Dr. Vinutha SP, Assistant Professor, provided a brief introduction to the location, functions, and clinical conditions of abdominal organs.
  • Musculoskeletal System: A brief talk was delivered by Dr. Ravishankar MV on basic tissues in the human body, muscular system classification, functions, and different types of movements. He also demonstrated different body parts along with the concerned bones of the upper and lower limbs.

Impact: The training session was highly appreciated by the participants, providing them with practical insights into the anatomy and its relevance to yoga practice and teaching.

World Immunization Day – 2023 - Celebrations & Walkathon – 10-11-2023

The Department of General Medicine, JSS Medical College and Hospital, takes pride in informing that “WORLD IMMUNIZATION DAY” was celebrated on 10th November, 2023, at JSS Hospital lobby. The program was inaugurated by our Executive Secretary, Dr. C.G. Betsurmath.

Dignitaries Present: The program was presided by Registrar Dr. Manjunatha B, Dr. Mahesh R (Director of Medical Education), Principal Dr. Basavana Gowdappa H, along with Dr. Mruthyunjaya (Pharmacy Incharge) and Administrative Officer Mr. Lokesh. The event was also attended by Vice Principals, HODs from various departments, administrators, postgraduates, house surgeons, undergraduates, and nursing students. Special invitees included representatives from various travel agencies from the city of Mysuru. Nearly 400 people attended the event.

Inaugural Event:

  • Welcome note by Dr. Ravi Kumar Y S, Professor and Head, Department of General Medicine.
  • Invocation by Dr. Preethi Prabhu, Postgraduate student from the Department of Medicine.
  • Lighting of the lamp by the Executive Secretary, followed by the release of a brochure on adult immunization and travel medicine.
  • Speeches by Dr. C.G. Betsurmath, Dr. Basavana Gowdappa, and Mr. Vishwanath (from a travel agency) on the need for immunization.
  • Vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Thippeswamy T, Associate Professor, Department of Medicine.
  • Anchoring by Smt. Pallavi.

Walkathon: A walkathon was organized along a designated route with all precautions, creating awareness about the need for immunization among the general public. Nearly 250 students from various departments participated in the walkathon, which was followed by refreshments.

Immunization Centre: JSS Hospital's adult immunization and travel medicine centre is the first of its kind in Mysuru and one of very few centers across the state and country. To date, more than 5,000 people have received various vaccines. Mass immunization with the Hepatitis B vaccine was carried out for students from dental, medical, and allied health sciences. Apart from administering vaccines, the center raises public awareness about adult immunization through outreach programs such as radio talks and print media education.

World Diabetes Day Celebration – 15-11-2023

The Department of General Medicine, JSS Medical College and Hospital, in association with KRSSDI and API Mysore Chapter, takes pride in informing that “WORLD DIABETES DAY” was celebrated on 15th November, 2023, at JSS Hospital lobby followed by a CME.

Dignitaries Present: The program was presided over by Dr. C.D. Srinivasa Murthy, Dr. Mahesh R (Director of Medical Education), Principal Dr. Basavana Gowdappa H, along with Dr. C.P. Madhu (Medical Superintendent) and Administrative Officer Mr. Lokesh. On the occasion of World Diabetes Day, a quiz competition for Postgraduates on diabetes was conducted at the Medicine Seminar Hall, JSS Hospital, on 10.11.2023. Prizes for Postgraduates were distributed by Sri Mahesh. R, In-Charge Director of Medical Education, JSS Mahavidyapeetha, Mysuru.

CME Programme: The CME Programme was held at JSS Auditorium. It included 3 interesting lectures on diabetes by eminent speakers Dr. K.N. Manohar, D. Anish Behl, and Dr. Pavan. Nearly 200 delegates participated. The program covered important aspects of diabetes, such as “Is Diabetes Reversible?”, “Prevention of Diabetic Foot,” and “Lifestyle Modification in Diabetes.” The program concluded with closing remarks by Dr. Prasad M.C, Secretary, API Mysore Chapter, and was highly appreciated by all attendees.

Breastfeeding Week 2023 - 16.11.2023

Breastfeeding Week 2023: Making a difference for working parents. World Breastfeeding Week is observed globally during the first week of August with an aim to promote breastfeeding in community and hospital settings. This year’s theme focused on enabling breastfeeding - making a difference for working parents.

The Department of Pediatrics, JSS Hospital, organized the inauguration function of World Breastfeeding Week in association with IAP Mysore on 1st August 2023 at SRCA Auditorium, JSS Hospital, between 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm.

Event Highlights:
