BREATHE-Mysuru: Indoor Air Pollution in 1,000 Homes and Sustainable Plant-Based Mitigation

Project title
Phytoremediation of indoor air pollution in urban homes to improve air quality using innovative-sustainable technology based-plant wall air filtration system.
Funding agency
Indian Council of Medical Research, Government of India
Principal Investigator
Dr Rajesh Kumar T, Professor, Department of Biochemistry, JSS Medical College, JSS Academy of Higher Education & Research

Project Goal

To characterize indoor air quality in urban homes and develop a sustainable phytoremediation technology — a hybrid plant-and-mechanical filtration unit — and test its efficiency in improving indoor air quality. The evaluation examines the unit's ability to reduce indoor air pollution, its impact on respiratory health, and its acceptability among residents.

Research and Field Activities

Hybrid plant filtration unit

Development and testing of the BioAHER hybrid plant-and-mechanical filtration concept for sustainable indoor air-quality improvement.

Controlled experiments

Experiments undertaken in office set-ups and an exposure chamber to evaluate the filtration approach under controlled conditions.

Indoor air monitoring

Monitoring indoor pollutant levels including PM2.5 and volatile organic compounds (VOC) in homes.

Field testing in Mysuru

Testing the plant-based filtration unit in homes located in Mysuru to assess real-world performance and resident acceptability.
